Beerten et al. (2021) conducted a pilot study in a primary care setting to assess whether the introduction of the FibriCheck is feasible for the elderly. The mean age of study participants was 78 years old and smartphone familiarity at baseline was relatively poor. Even though, they found high measurement compliance and most participants found the app easy to use.
These findings were confirmed by 1,930 patients based on routine implementation evidence from TeleCheck-AF, of which 42% were using FibriCheck after AF ablation. Based on results from an online survey, patients agreed that the FibriCheck app was easy to use (94%) and easy to install (89%). Moreover, the app gave patients a safe feeling (74%) due to being in constant heart rate and rhythm control.
Furthermore, Gawalko et al (2022) state that older age and previous AF ablation were predictors of optimal patient motivation and adherence to app-based heart rate/rhythm monitoring based on data from 990 consecutive patients with diagnosed AF. Therefore, HCPs involved in the management and care of patients with AF should not be discouraged to provide mHealth technologies to elderly patients.
Professor Jeroen M Hendriks (Flinders University and Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia) points out that the TeleCheck-AF is a user-friendly and short intervention that puts the patient in charge of their care by delivering vital data which may also result in better adherence to the treatment regime. One of his patients stated the following:
“I am 78 years of age and much enjoyed being part of this project. I strictly measured three times a day and had the feeling I was on top of my care coordination.”
